Our research

The bioengineering laboratory possesses the facility for advanced research endeavours with broad range of applications as follows:

  • Fabrication of polymer scaffold for tissue engineering
  • Precision cleaning of microchips and biomaterials
  • Sterilisation of biomedical devices, pharmaceuticals and food ingredients with a non-destructive-solvent free- low temperature dense gas process
  • Production of nano and micro-particles with narrow particle size distribution for pharmaceutical applications such as novel drug delivery systems and design of diagnostic devices
  • Synthesis of various controlled and target drug delivery systems such as smart hydrogels and liposome for delivery of drugs such as anti-cancers to promote patient compliances.
  • Extraction and fractionation of high value compounds with solvent free processes.
  • Utilisation of enzymes and micro-organisms for wastewater treatment
  • Synthesis of high value compounds such as biofuels, pharmaceuticals including anti-bodies, enantiomers, etc..
  • Disinfection of water using advanced membrane technology in conjunction with dielectrophoretic particle aggregation to improve the performance of membrane separation methods.

Research facilities

  • Supercritical fluid facilities for sterilisation, micronisation, extraction, synthesis, polymer processing
  • Cell culturing facility, such as incubator, Class I & II cabinets, controlled temperature centrifuges
  • Bioreactors for bio-medical cell culture (A fully automated 50 litre fermentation reactor with downstream processes).
  • Microscope with micromanipulator for cell fusion studies
    Freezedryer

Analytical techniques

  • Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) to obtain information for chromatographic behaviour, UV spectrum and molecular mass simultaneously for each compound, and the identify/structure of particular compound.
  • Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) for fast and easy generation of FTIR spectra of solid and liquid samples or solutions.
